چکیده

We consider a single-machine scheduling problem with each job having an uncertain processing time which can take any real value within each corresponding closed interval before completing the job. The scheduling objective is to minimize the total weighted flow time of all n jobs, where there is a weight associated with each job. We establish the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a job permutation which remains optimal for any possible realizations of these n uncertain processing times. We also establish the necessary and sufficient condition for another extreme case that for each of the n! job permutations there exists a possible realization of the uncertain processing times that this permutation is uniquely optimal. Testing each of the conditions takes polynomial time in terms of the number n of jobs.We develop precedence–dominance relations among the n jobs in dealing with the general case of this uncertain scheduling problem. In case there exist no precedence–dominance relations among a subset of n jobs, a heuristic procedure to minimize the maximal absolute or relative regret is used for sequencing such a job subset. Computational experiments for randomly generated instances with n jobs (5 ≤ n ≤ 1000) show that the established precedence–dominance relations are quite useful in reducing the total weighted flow time. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. A New ILP Model for Identical Parallel-Machine Scheduling with Family Setup Times Minimizing the Total Weighted Flow Time by a Genetic Algorithm

This paper presents a novel, integer-linear programming (ILP) model for an identical parallel-machine scheduling problem with family setup times that minimizes the total weighted flow time (TWFT). Some researchers have addressed parallel-machine scheduling problems in the literature over the last three decades. However, the existing studies have been limited to the research of independent jobs,...

Sequencing Jobs with Uncertain Processing times and Minimizing the Weighted Total Flow Time

We consider an uncertain version of the scheduling problem to sequence set of jobs J on a single machine with minimizing the weighted total flow time, provided that processing time of a job can take on any real value from the given closed interval. It is assumed that job processing time is unknown random variable before the actual occurrence of this time, where probability distribution of such ...

Minimizing Makespan with Start Time Dependent Jobs in a Two Machine Flow Shop

[if gte mso 9]> The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of scheduling a set of start time-dependent jobs in a two-machine flow shop, in which the actual processing times of jobs increase linearly according to their starting time. The objective of this problem is to minimize the makespan. The problem is known to be NP-hardness[ah1] ; therefore, there is no polynomial-time algorithm...

Optimal Two Stages Specially Structured Flow Shop Scheduling: Minimize the Rental Cost with Independent Setup Time

One of the earliest results in flow shop scheduling theory is an algorithm given by Johnson’s [1] for scheduling jobs on two or three machines to minimize the total elapsed time whenever the processing times of jobs are random. The present paper is an attempt to develop a heuristic algorithm for two stages specially structured flow shop scheduling in which the processing times of the jobs a...

A genetic algorithm approach for problem

In this paper, a genetic algorithm is presented for an identical parallel-machine scheduling problem with family setup time that minimizes the total weighted flow time ( ). No set-up is necessary between jobs belonging to the same family. A set-up must be scheduled when switching from the processing of family i jobs to those of another family j, i  j, the duration of this set-up being the sequ...

Minimizing the energy consumption and the total weighted tardiness for the flexible flowshop using NSGA-II and NRGA

This paper presents a bi-objective MIP model for the flexible flow shop scheduling  problem (FFSP) in which the total weighted tardiness and the energy consumption are minimized simultaneously. In addition to considering unrelated machines at each stage, the set-up times are supposed to be sequence- and machine-dependent, and it is assumed that jobs have different release tim...
